42 by Matt Shini, performing in Maribor 25th April 2014 from Upri Se on Vimeo.
This amazing part of almost 3-hours long solo dedicated to Gregor Kamnikar’s solo 39 is a refined embodiment of a simple concept. Matt Shini is dancing to the Preludes and Fugues by Dmitri Shostakovich (on this video is the fugue of the first Prelude and Fugue).
What Matt is set to do is quite simple. On prelude he dances away to his own wit. Withing that dance he looks for dancing principles. As fugue kicks in, he takes one of dance principles uncovered in the prelude part, and lets that dance principle dance itself away, revealing to Matt and others its features.
Matt does all this by sensing one of the people he picks up for that day. For this particular day (25th April 2014 which is birthday of Gregor Kamnikar) he dances 42 though his sensation of Gregor Kamnikar.
What we see in the video is amazing consistency, fluidity and clear dance principle at work. This dance priniciple is quite hard to grasp with words. One can sense it through kinesthetic sense. Use it when watching this short excerpt.
