#88 Throw Away Your Books, Rally in the Streets (1973, Shuji Terayama)
This film was too much. I lost my shit completely several times at moments of it. From the transition from slamming the football into the wall to the burning American flag, following the talk of the relation between sports ball size and verility, early on you know you’re in for something special and exciting. Stuff like that just puts a fat grin on your face. You can’t help but be enthused.
Its like a proto-punk political musical, stringing vignetted segments of a struggling family together through songs and its all a bit loose and hectic but always interesting, and as as a clarion call it is compelling too.The music is so so great, and gives it real spirit. I don’t what to say other than look at my screencaps, read a small bit about the film, and your interest should be more than piqued.
Pastoral felt more mature, maybe more accomplished, but this has a youthful, infectious energy and rebellious fury to it that is a real draw, and I appreciate it more for that.
